While Nagarahole National Park doesn't have a rigidly defined "zone" system with specific names like some other tiger reserves, the tourism is primarily organized around entry gates that access different areas of the park. The two main entry gates that tourists use for safaris are:
Kabini Gate (Near Karapura): Located in the southern part of the park, this is the more popular and well-known entry point, often referred to as the Kabini Zone. Safaris from this gate typically explore areas closer to the Kabini backwaters. This area is famous for its high density of wildlife, particularly elephants, and offers excellent opportunities for spotting tigers, leopards (including black panthers), wild dogs, and a variety of herbivores and birds. Jeep safaris and boat safaris on the Kabini River are the main attractions from this gate.
Veeranahosahalli Gate (Near Hunsur): Situated in the northern part of the park, this gate offers access to a different section of Nagarhole. Historically, this gate was primarily known for offering mini-bus safaris conducted by the forest department. While jeep safaris might also operate from this area now, the experience and landscape can differ from the Kabini side, often featuring denser forest areas.
Within these main areas, jeep safaris from the Kabini side are often described as taking you into two general types of areas:
Key things to remember about safari areas in Nagarahole:
In summary, while Nagarahole doesn't have numbered or distinctly named zones like some other parks, the tourism is effectively managed through the two main entry gates (Kabini and Veeranahosahalli), each providing access to different and rewarding wildlife habitats. The Kabini area, with its backwaters and diverse terrain, is particularly famous for its wildlife sightings.
